Do What You Love

Both in the gym and outside of the gym, if you aren’t doing what you’re passionate about then you’re just sitting and wasting time. In the gym, if you want to lift heavy then lift heavy. If you love working out like a bodybuilder, life like a bodybuilder. If you want to do both, then train for both in separate blocks. The gym is a place to blow off steam, get better, and continue to push yourself to new heights. Why waste your time doing things you don’t enjoy doing?

In Life

Life is too short as many people know and there is little to no reason to waste your time doing a bunch of crap you don’t want to do. Now, you might be sitting there thinking “What does a 21-year-old know about life?”. Valid question, but losing my younger brother when he was 14 and I was just 18 gives me a little more perspective on how short life really is. If every single day could be your last and you are living for the weekend, you need to re-evaluate your life.

Every day should be filled with what you enjoy doing. You might have to do things you don’t want to do, but that’s part of the process. Yes, you may be in a place where you need to work to support your rent, bills, or family, but there are 24 hours in a day, 8 at work, you still got 16 hours. Do something to get your closer to where you want to go. Follow passions, follow dreams, don’t just accept that this is how life is. You only got one, there isn’t a single damn reason to be sitting there miserable.

In the Gym

In this case, sometimes you are going to have to do things you might not want to in order to look how you want to look or lift what you want to lift. Accessory movements suck but grinding through them will take you where you want to go. No, I don’t enjoy every lifting session, but I enjoy the entire process of going where I am trying to go. Keep your eyes focused on the bigger goal when you aren’t feeling it.

If you don’t like working out, then do the bare minimum to stay healthy and move on. If you like running but not lifting, then run and do the bare minimum in weights. If you like lifting and hate running, then lift and do the bare minimum in the form of cardio. Now, if this is how you’re going to go about it that’s fine, but don’t expect to get a muscular physique from running. Just like you can’t expect to lose weight by doing zero cardio whatsoever. Sometimes you just have to fall in love with the process.
